Rope-Grown Mussels Aqua Farms, LLC, cultivates mussels below rafts along the rugged Maine Coast. Utilizing suspended techniques uniquely adapted to the area, rope grown mussels are environmentally friendly and beneficial to the local ecology. They are served in fine restaurants from coast to coast. Aqua Farms mussels never lie on the bottom of the ocean. Mussel spat (juvenile mussels) are farmed at our Blue Hill site for seed stock. We then transplant the seed mussels to our grow-out rafts in Casco Bay. Rope-grown mussels spend their entire life in the water column, suspended above the bottom of the ocean. This location encourages rapid growth, full sweet meats, minimal shell weight and no sand. We harvest mussels year-round. The grow-out rafts are located on sites leased from the State of Maine. Harvests are generally conducted twice a week to insure a steady supply of the freshest live mussels. Mussels are high in protein and low in fat. They are a source of omega 3 and other essential nutrients. Simply delicious steamed, sautéed, baked stuffed or in any of your favorite recipes.
